Barun Sengupta (Bengali: বরুণ সেনগুপ্ত) was a famous Indian journalist and writer. He was born on January 23, 1934, and passed away on June 19, 2008. He is best known for starting the Bartaman newspaper. People in West Bengal really liked his clear and brave way of writing about politics.

Who Was Barun Sengupta?
Barun Sengupta was born in Barisal, which is now part of Bangladesh. His parents were Nirmalananda Sengupta and Ranibala Devi. Before India was divided in 1947, his family moved to Kolkata. They rented a home in the northern part of the city.
His Early Life and Education
Barun Sengupta started school at B.M. School in Barisal. After moving to Kolkata, he went to Town School. He later studied commerce at City College, Kolkata. After college, he tried to start a magazine called Bhabikal, but it only lasted for a few issues.
A Career in Journalism
In 1957, Barun Sengupta started a weekly newspaper called Bartaman. He got help from Hemanta Kumar Bose, a well-known political leader. In 1960, he joined Anandabazar Patrika, another big newspaper. By 1965, he became their first special reporter for political news.
During a challenging time in India, he was even sent to jail because of his brave reporting. Another reporter, Gour Kishore Ghosh, was also jailed with him.
Starting His Own Newspaper
In 1984, Barun Sengupta left Anandabazar Patrika. He wanted to start his own daily newspaper. On December 7, 1984, he launched Bartaman. This newspaper quickly became very popular. People loved its direct and fearless style of reporting.
Later, he also started two more successful magazines. These were Saptahik Bartaman, a weekly, and Sukhi Grihokon, a monthly. Both of these are still widely read in West Bengal today.
Writing Books
Barun Sengupta also wrote many books about India's political situation. Some of his famous books include Pala Badaler Pala, Sab Chatitra Kalpanik, and Andhakarer Antaraley. He also wrote a book about the mysterious disappearance of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, called Netajir Antardhan Rahasya.
One of his books, "Indira Ekadashi", was about the time Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India. He passed away in a nursing home in Kolkata after a short illness.
