History of Baryulgil

The name Baryulgil comes from an Aboriginal language. It means a type of large lizard. Some people also think it might be a changed version of 'Yulgilbar'. This was the name of Edwards Ogelvie's farm.

A Post Office opened in Baryulgil on January 1, 1896. It stayed open for many years before closing in 1991.

Asbestos Mining in Baryulgil

For a long time, one of the most important jobs in Baryulgil was mining. From 1953 to 1979, there was an asbestos mine operating here. Asbestos is a natural material that was once used in building.

Later, it was discovered that the mine caused serious health problems for people living there. This was especially true for the Aboriginal community. The health impacts were written about by journalist Matt Peacock. He wrote a book called Killer Company and it was also made into a TV movie called Devil's Dust.
