About Bashkim Fino
Bashkim Fino studied economics in Tirana, Albania, and also in the United States. He started his career as an economist in his hometown of Gjirokastër. In 1992, he became the mayor of Gjirokastër, which means he was in charge of running the city. He was married and had two children.
Becoming Prime Minister
In 1997, Albania faced a big crisis. The country was in trouble because many people lost their savings in something called 'pyramid schemes' (a type of risky investment). To help calm things down, the President at the time, Sali Berisha, chose Bashkim Fino to be the Prime Minister of Albania. Fino was from the Socialist Party of Albania, which was an opposing political group. His job was to lead a special government that would try to unite the country.
Fino served as Prime Minister from March to July 1997. During this time, new elections were held. His Socialist Party won a large number of votes. After the elections, he stepped down, and Fatos Nano, the leader of his party, became the new Prime Minister.
Later Political Career
After being Prime Minister, Bashkim Fino continued to be an important figure in Albanian politics. He served as a Member of Parliament, representing an area in the Korçë District. This means he was elected by the people to represent them in the country's parliament.
Fino also taught at the Political Academy of the Socialist Party of Albania. This academy helps train new politicians and leaders for the Socialist Party.
His Passion for Football
Bashkim Fino was a big fan of football, especially the Italian team Inter Milan. In 2018, he decided to run for president of the Albanian Football Federation. He wanted to lead the organization that manages football in Albania. However, he did not win the election. He believed the voting process was not fair and planned to complain to international football groups like UEFA and FIFA.
His Passing
Bashkim Fino passed away on March 29, 2021, at the age of 58. He had been battling Leukemia, a serious illness. Sadly, he also got COVID-19, which led to his death.
