The Bass Islands are a group of three islands located in Lake Erie. This large lake is found in the United States, specifically north of Sandusky, Ohio. The islands are also south of Pelee Island in Ontario, Canada.

The three main islands are South Bass Island, North Bass Island, and Middle Bass Island. South Bass Island is the biggest of the three. All of them are part of Put-in-Bay Township in Ottawa County, Ohio. Long ago, Middle Bass was called Ile de Fleurs, and North Bass was known as Isle St. George.

The Bass Island Archipelago

The Bass Island Archipelago is a larger group of islands. It includes the three Bass Islands. It also has other islands in Ohio and Ontario, Canada. Some of the Ohio islands are Ballast, Gibraltar, and Kelleys. Canadian islands include Pelee and Middle.

Island Distances

The islands are quite close to each other. Middle Bass Island is about 0.5 miles (0.8 km) north of South Bass Island. North Bass Island is about 1.0 mile (1.6 km) north of Middle Bass Island. The border between Ohio (USA) and Ontario (Canada) is about 1.0 mile (1.6 km) north of North Bass Island.

Fun Things to Do

Put-in-Bay is a small village on South Bass Island. It is a very popular place for tourists to visit in the summer. Many people come to enjoy the lake and the island's activities.

One important landmark on South Bass Island is Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial. This tall monument remembers the Battle of Lake Erie. This famous battle happened during the War of 1812. The memorial is near Put-in-Bay.

South Bass Island also hosts a big boating event each year. It is called the Inter-Lake Yachting Association regatta. People often call it "Bay Week." Many boats and sailors come together for this fun event.
