Bass Lake is a cool lake located in Grand Traverse County, Michigan. It used to be called Culver Lake. This Bass Lake is the biggest of three lakes in the county that share the name "Bass Lake." The other two are found near Interlochen and Forest Lakes.

Bass Lake has a unique shape. It's naturally split into two parts, like two separate lakes connected by a narrow channel. This channel is about 199 feet (61 meters) wide. The northern part is usually just called Bass Lake. But the southern part sometimes goes by other names, like Beitner Lake or Mulberry Lake.

This lake sits between two even bigger lakes: Long Lake to the west and Silver Lake to the east. Water flows out of Bass Lake through the west branch of Beitner Creek. This creek then flows into the Boardman River.

The closest towns to Bass Lake are Grawn and Traverse City. There's also a small community called Bass Lake right on the eastern shore, at the end of Culver Road. Most of the lake is in Long Lake Township, but a small part of the southern end reaches into Green Lake Township.

Fun at Bass Lake

Bass Lake is a popular spot for outdoor activities. Many people enjoy fishing here. The lake is well-known for having lots of pike, bluegill, and, of course, bass fish. That's how the lake got its name!

Boating is another popular activity. People often go water skiing on the lake. Boaters can also visit Long and Darien islands, which are the largest islands in the lake. You can get your boat onto the lake from the northwest shore.

Many people who live around the lake have smaller cabin houses. There are also some small hotels where visitors can stay.

Girl Scout Camp

For many years, Girl Scouts in the area used to camp at Camp Greilick. This camp was near Arbutus Lake and was owned by the Boy Scouts.

But in the summer of 1955, a new camp just for Girl Scouts opened. It was called Camp Sakakawea and was located on the southwestern shore of Bass Lake. This gave Girl Scouts their own special place to enjoy the outdoors.
