The Bass River is a short river in southeastern New Jersey. It flows for about 4.7 miles (7.6 km). This river is a tributary, meaning it flows into a larger river, the Mullica River.

The Bass River is mostly found in Bass River, New Jersey. The township actually got its name from the river! The river itself was named after Jeremiah Basse. He was an important person who served as governor for both West Jersey and East Jersey a long time ago.

Exploring the Bass River's Journey

The Bass River starts its journey in the Pinelands. This is a special natural area in southeastern Burlington County. From there, it flows south through the beautiful Bass River State Forest.

The river then joins the Mullica River from the north. This meeting point is about 1 mile (1.6 km) upstream from where the Mullica River flows into Great Bay. The last 2 miles (3.2 km) of the Bass River act like an arm of the Mullica River's estuary. An estuary is where a river meets the sea, mixing fresh and salt water.

The Bass River's Watershed

The Bass River is part of the larger area that drains into the Mullica River. This whole area is called a watershed. The Mullica River watershed includes a huge area of untouched wetlands in New Jersey. Wetlands are like soggy lands, full of unique plants and animals.

The Bass River itself drains an area of about 9.2 square kilometers (3.5 square miles). Most of the land in this drainage area is covered by forests. These forests are protected by the state, which helps keep the river and its surroundings healthy. Closer to where the Bass River meets the Mullica, the tides from the ocean can affect the river's water levels.

Rivers Joining the Bass River

Smaller streams and branches flow into the Bass River, adding to its water. These are called tributaries.
