How Bateman Got Its Name
The suburb of Bateman is named after a family of important business people. They started their businesses after arriving in the Swan River colony in 1830.
The Bateman Family's Early Days
John Bateman built a general store in Fremantle. He also became the postmaster there in 1833. He helped start a whaling business at Bathers Beach, Fremantle. After he passed away in 1855, his sons continued the family businesses.
