Winthrop is a suburb located south of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia. It is part of the City of Melville area.

Discovering Winthrop's Past

Winthrop was once a large tree plantation filled with pine trees. This land was owned by the University of Western Australia. The first pieces of land, called blocks, were sold in the early 1980s.

After the first families moved in, more blocks were sold over time. A small shop, known as a convenience store, opened soon after. This store grew to include a post office, an IGA supermarket, and a flower shop. Later, Winthrop Primary School and the Winthrop Village Shopping Centre also opened.

People really wanted to live in Winthrop. Some even slept near the sales office for up to a week. They did this just to make sure they could buy a block of land!

How Winthrop Got Its Name

The name Winthrop comes from Sir John Winthrop Hackett. He was the very first Chancellor of the University of Western Australia. Today, there are not many signs left of Winthrop's past as a pine tree plantation. You might only see a few scattered pine trees remaining.
