Willagee's Past: How It Started
Willagee gets its name from Willagee Swamp. This was a natural area named by the Noongar people, who are the traditional owners of this land. The swamp has since been filled in.
The suburb began as a housing area called "Willagee Park." It was created by the State Housing Commission. The main goal was to provide homes for people working in new factories near Fremantle.
Work on the land started in December 1950. New roads were built by the Melville Roads Board in 1951. Some of the first houses were built in factories in Austria and then brought over. Today, Willagee has many older wooden homes. However, the area is being updated with new and improved housing.
