The Battle of Bloody Bay, known as Blàr Bàgh na Fala in Scottish Gaelic, was a big naval battle. It happened near Tobermory on the Isle of Mull in Scotland. The fight was between John MacDonald of Islay, who was the powerful Lord of the Isles and leader of Clan Donald, and his own son, Angus Og Macdonald.

Historians aren't sure of the exact date, but it was around 1480 or 1483. Angus Og won the battle. After his victory, he took control from his father and ruled for about ten years. However, this win came at a great cost. Many clan members died, and almost half of their ships were destroyed. This battle greatly weakened the power of the Lords of the Isles. Angus, who was the last independent Lord of the Isles, was later murdered in 1490.

Why Did the Battle of Bloody Bay Happen?

This battle was part of a family disagreement within Clan MacDonald. In 1476, James III of Scotland, the king, found out that John of Islay had made a secret agreement with Edward IV of England. Because of this, King James took away many of John's lands and titles. John lost his earldom and control over areas like Nairn and Inverness.

Even though John kept the title "Lord of the Isles," it was now given by the king, not just claimed by John. This loss of land and power made John less respected among his own clan. The Lordship of the Isles had always grown by taking more land. But now that it was shrinking, old problems and disagreements within the clan came to the surface. These issues focused on Angus Óg, John's son.

According to some stories, Angus even forced his father, John, out of their home and out of leadership. John then gathered his remaining supporters to try and stop his son's rebellion. Their fleets of galleys, which were large sailing ships, met near the Isle of Mull. This area became known as Bloody Bay because of the fierce battle that took place there.

Who Fought in the Battle?

In the Battle of Bloody Bay, John MacDonald of Islay had help from several other clans. These included Clan MacLean, Clan MacLeod, and Clan MacNeil.

His son, Angus Og Macdonald, led the other side. Angus was supported by important leaders like Allan Macruari of the Clan MacDonald of Clanranald, Donald Gallach of the Clan MacDonald of Sleat, and Domhnall Mac Aonghais of the Clan MacDonald of Keppoch. The MacLeods of Lewis also joined Angus's side.

The fighting was very intense. Angus's forces defeated his father's allies from the west Highlands.

What Happened During the Battle?

One old document, the Bannatyne manuscript, tells us more about the battle. It says that William Dubh, the chief of the MacLeods, was killed early in the fight. When their leader fell, the MacLeods started to lose hope.

However, a priest named Callum Clerich told the person guarding the Fairy Flag to unfurl it. The Fairy Flag was a special banner belonging to the MacLeods, believed to have magical powers. The manuscript claims that when the MacLeods of Lewis saw this sacred flag, they switched sides and joined John's forces. But by then, the battle was almost over, and Angus's forces won.

Many clan members died in the battle. This included the person carrying the Fairy Flag, Murcha Beach, and the twelve men who were supposed to protect it.

Hector Odhar Maclean, the chief of Clan MacLean and John of Islay's naval commander, was captured. William Dubh MacLeod, the chief of Clan MacLeod, was killed along with many of his clan members.

What Happened After the Battle?

After the Battle of Bloody Bay, Angus Og Macdonald took over power from his father. He ruled for about ten years until he was murdered.

However, the battle had a huge impact. Many clan members died, and almost half of the clan's ships were sunk. This meant that the power of the Lords of the Isles became much weaker after this conflict.
