The Battle of Collejares was an important fight during the Reconquista. The Reconquista was a long period when Christian kingdoms in Spain took back land from Muslim rulers. This battle happened in 1406 near the towns of Úbeda and Baeza in a region called Granada, Spain. It was a clash between the Kingdom of Castile, led by their king, Henry III of Castile, and the Emirate of Granada, led by their ruler, Sultan Muhammad VII. The Kingdom of Castile won this battle.
What Led to the Battle?
The Kingdom of Castile and the Emirate of Granada had signed a peace treaty. This meant they agreed not to fight each other for a while. However, things changed within the Emirate of Granada. There were power struggles and new leaders in their court. These changes led them to break the peace agreement.
The ruler of Granada, Sultan Muhammad VII, decided to invade the territory of Murcia. He was encouraged and helped by the Marinid Dynasty from Morocco.
Meanwhile, Henry III of Castile had just finished a series of battles against Portugal. He had signed a peace treaty with Portugal in 1402. This gave him a chance to focus on the threat from Granada.
The Battle of Collejares
King Henry III moved his army towards Granada. Granada was the last major Muslim stronghold on the Iberian Peninsula (the land where Spain and Portugal are today). This was after centuries of the Reconquista.
The two armies met in an area around Collejares. This place was close to the towns of Úbeda and Baeza. The Castilian forces, led by King Henry III, were very strong. They managed to defeat the army of the Emirate of Granada. This was a big victory for the Kingdom of Castile.
A famous Castilian knight named Juan de Tovar y Toledo fought bravely in this campaign. He was given land and a special title for his actions at Collejares. King Henry III died a few months later, in December 1406.
