The Battle of Fallen Timbers Monument is also known as the Anthony Wayne Memorial. It is a group of statues made by Bruce Saville.

This monument was officially opened in 1929. It stands where the Battle of Fallen Timbers happened on August 20, 1794. In that battle, General "Mad Anthony" Wayne led American forces. They fought against a group of different Native American tribes. Chiefs Little Turtle, Turkey Foot, and Blue Jacket were among the leaders. The monument is in a park near Maumee, Ohio.

About the Monument

The monument has a tall base, about 15 feet high. On top is a bronze statue of General Wayne. He stands between statues of a Native American scout and a frontiersman. The sides of the base have three bronze carvings. These carvings are called bas reliefs.

The battle area got its name, "Fallen Timbers," from a big tornado. The tornado had knocked down many trees there.

Fallen Timbers Battlefield

The Fallen Timbers Battlefield was named a National Historic Landmark in 1960. This means it is a very important historical place.

Later, in 1995, new discoveries were made. A person named G. Michael Pratt found that the battlefield was not where people first thought. It was actually higher up and north of the monument. The Landmark's official location was changed to match this new discovery.

Fallen Timbers Battlefield and Fort Miamis National Historic Site

In 1999, the battlefield, the monument, and the site of Fort Miamis were all grouped together. They became the Fallen Timbers Battlefield and Fort Miamis National Historic Site. This site is part of the National Park System. It is managed by Toledo Metroparks, working with the Ohio Historical Society.

You can visit the Fort Miamis site. There are signs and information to help you learn about it. However, the Anthony Wayne Memorial is the most famous part of this historic site. It is the main way people remember the battle.
