The Battle of Puerto de Cavite was an important naval battle that took place on June 10, 1647. It was part of a long conflict known as the Eighty Years' War. In this battle, a fleet from the Netherlands fought against a Spanish fleet. The fight happened in Puerto de Cavite, which was a very important Spanish port located in Manila Bay, in the Philippines. The Spanish forces won this battle.
The Battle of Cavite
On June 10, 1647, twelve Dutch ships attacked Puerto de Cavite. This port was very important because it was the home base for the Manila galleons. These were large Spanish trading ships.
The Spanish and Filipino defenders fought back strongly. They used powerful cannons to fire at the Dutch ships. During the battle, they managed to sink the main Dutch warship.
After losing their flagship, the Dutch ships decided to leave. The Spanish and Filipino forces kept control of the port. However, this victory came with a high price. Porta Vaga, which was a strong stone fort defending the area, was destroyed during the fighting.
Even after this defeat, the Dutch continued to bother ships and areas around Manila Bay. They kept doing this until the war ended in 1648. The war officially finished with a peace agreement called the Treaty of Münster.
