A Look Back: Bay Settlement's History
Bay Settlement is one of the oldest places where people settled in Wisconsin. Only a few other places, like Green Bay, De Pere, and Prairie du Chien, are older. In 1830, only eight people lived here.
Important Buildings and Services
The community is home to Holy Cross Church. This is one of the oldest Catholic churches in the county. It started as a mission in Bay Settlement in 1834. A mission is like an outpost for religious work.
Later, in 1868, a post office opened in Bay Settlement. This made it easier for people to send and receive mail.
Growing Years: The 1850s and 1860s
Even though some settlers came to Bay Settlement in the late 1830s and 1840s, the area was still quite empty. But after 1850, many more people started to arrive. People from eastern states in the U.S. and from countries in Europe moved to Wisconsin.
During the 1850s and 1860s, all the land around Bay Settlement became settled. The community grew into an important center. It offered services like shops and churches. People from different backgrounds came to live here. These included Belgians, Dutch, Germans, and some Irish settlers. This made the population a mix of different nationalities and languages.
