Bayport was a "town" (a type of local government area) in La Pointe County, in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It no longer exists today.
What Was Bayport?
In the United States, a "town" is a local area with its own government. Bayport was one of these towns. It was located in what was then called La Pointe County. This county was much larger than it is today. It covered areas that are now Bayfield, Ashland, and Douglas counties.
How Bayport Was Created
When La Pointe County was first set up in 1845, it had only one town. This town was called the Town of La Pointe. It was the only local government area in the entire county.
This changed in March 1856. That's when the new Town of Bayport was created. Bayport included almost all of La Pointe County. The only part it didn't include was the Apostle Islands. Those islands stayed part of the original Town of La Pointe.
Why Bayport Disappeared
Over time, people started to move away from the Bayport area. Because fewer people lived there, the town eventually stopped having its own government. The responsibility for managing the area went back to the Town of La Pointe.
Later, in 1867, new towns were created from this land. These included the Town of Ashland, Town of Bayfield, and Town of Superior. By this time, La Pointe County itself had also changed. It was divided into three new counties: Ashland, Douglas, and Bayfield. This is how the Town of Bayport faded from history.
