Bayshore Gardens is a special kind of community in Manatee County, Florida, United States. It's called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that looks like a town but isn't officially governed as one.
In 2020, about 19,904 people lived in Bayshore Gardens. This was more than the 16,323 people who lived there in 2010. Bayshore Gardens is part of a larger area called the North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History of Bayshore Gardens
Bayshore Gardens started in 1955. A group of business people from New York bought a large area of land. This land was on the eastern shore of Sarasota Bay. It used to be a place where tomatoes were grown.
The group planned a new community. It would have homes, schools, churches, and shops. There would also be fun places like recreation areas and a marina for boats. The homes were built in a popular style from that time. Today, we call this style "mid-century modern."
Opening the Community
Bayshore Gardens officially opened in 1956. Four model homes were ready for people to see. There were seven different home designs to choose from. Some popular designs were called the Seagrape and the Bird of Paradise.
Homes cost between $8,000 and $15,000, including the land. Special lower prices were offered for veterans. The very first home was sold in July 1956 to Jennie and Samuel Gibson. Their home was in the Hibiscus style.
Growing the Neighborhood
By April 1958, Bayshore Gardens had 400 homes. A local architect named Sidney Wilkinson designed all of them. Richard Morton's company built these first homes.
Soon, other builders also started building homes there. These included Richmond Homes and Arrow Home Builders. They added new designs like the Cayman and the Windward. Arrow Home Builders built larger custom homes right on the waterfront.
Shopping and Community Life
In November 1959, the Bayshore Gardens Shopping Center opened. It had many stores, including a Publix grocery store. There was also a beauty shop, a barbershop, and a hardware store.
The community grew very fast. By 1960, it was the largest voting area in the county. That same year, the shopping center got even bigger. More stores were added, and a movie theater opened.
Protecting History in Bayshore Gardens
In 2014, people started a project to protect the old homes in Bayshore Gardens. Students from the University of Florida helped with this. They wanted Bayshore Gardens to be recognized as a special historical place.
The goal is to have it named the largest and most important collection of mid-century homes in Florida. Bayshore Gardens is still working to get this special historical status from the State of Florida.
Geography of Bayshore Gardens
Bayshore Gardens covers about 3.6 square miles (9.24 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a small part, about 0.06 square miles (0.15 square kilometers), is water.
The community is next to Sarasota Bay on its southwest side. To the southeast, it borders Bowlees Creek and the community of Whitfield. To the north, it is next to South Bradenton.

Bayshore Gardens has grown quite a bit over the years. In 1990, there were 17,062 people. By 2020, the population had increased to 19,904.
In 2000, the average age of people living in Bayshore Gardens was 44 years old. About 17.9% of the people were under 18 years old.
Education in Bayshore Gardens
The School District of Manatee County is in charge of public schools. They provide education for students from kindergarten to 12th grade in Manatee County.
State College of Florida
The main campus of the State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) is located in Bayshore Gardens. This campus is very large, covering 100 acres.
It has several important buildings. These include The Family Heritage House Museum and the Neel Performing Arts Center. The college's sports facilities are also on this campus.
Collegiate School
The State College of Florida Collegiate School also has a campus here. It is located right on the SCF Bradenton campus.
