Early Life and Education
Be Steadwell was born and grew up in Washington, D.C.. She is the youngest of four children in her family.
She went to The Field School. At age 14, she started singing when she joined the school's jazz band.
Later, she earned her first college degree from Oberlin College. She then got a special degree in film from Howard University.
Her Career
Music Journey
While studying at Howard University, Be Steadwell released new music videos on YouTube every week. Her first album, Queer Pop Mixtape, came out in 2013. This album helped her become more widely known.
She performed at the 2017 Women's March on the National Mall. She sang with famous artists like Maxwell and Janelle Monáe. They were part of Toshi Reagon's Big Lovely Band.
In June 2018, Steadwell released an album called Queer Love Songs. She said the album was a collection of love songs she had written over ten years. These songs shared her view as a Black woman who loves love.
Her album Succulent was released in April 2020. People described its sound as a mix of R&B, hip-hop, pop, and electronic music.
Other Creative Work
Be Steadwell produced her film, Vow of Silence, in 2014. She made it while she was in her film program. The film won several awards. These included the Howard University Paul Robeson Award in 2015. It also won Best Experimental Short at The Black Star Film Festival in 2015. The film received the Audience Choice Award at the QWOCMAP Film Festival in 2015. It was also shown at the NYC Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
In 2016, she was chosen to be a Strathmore Artist in Residence. The DC Commission on the Arts also gave her an artist fellowship.
