History of Beacon
Beacon has a history linked to coal mining. In 1894, coal miners in Beacon joined a workers' group called the United Mine Workers union. This group helped miners work together for better conditions. By 1902, their local group had 100 members.
A place called Evans, Iowa, was a coal mining town about 3 miles (4.8 km) northwest of Beacon. Mines there opened in 1879. By 1894, one large mine was producing 1,000 tons of coal every day. The coal seam, which is a layer of coal in the ground, was about 6 feet (1.8 meters) thick. Miners in Evans also formed their own groups in 1899 and 1902.
