History of Bealsville
Founding After the Civil War
Bealsville was founded after the American Civil War. It was started by people who had been enslaved but were now free. These new residents came from nearby communities. Some of these places included Knights, Plant City, and Hopewell.
The Southern Homestead Act
In 1866, a law called the Southern Homestead Act was passed. This law helped newly freed people get their own land. They could get plots of land usually ranging from 40 to 160 acres. To keep their land, the new owners had to build homes. They also had to clear the land for farming. Plus, they needed to show they had the tools to work the fields. This act helped them build new lives and create their own communities.
