Beans, Texas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Beans is a small, quiet place in Jasper County, Texas, in the United States. It's known by a few different names like Beans Place or Beans Community. This area isn't a city or town with its own local government; it's what's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and people living together without a formal city structure.

Beans is located on the west side of the Angelina River. It's about 12 miles (19 km) northwest of a larger town called Jasper.

How Beans Got Started

The Founding of Beans

The community of Beans was founded a long time ago, in 1904. A person named Ira S. Bean was the one who started it. He had a vision for this area.

The Story Behind the Name

When Ira S. Bean first started the community, he decided to name its post office "Horger." This was done to honor a man named John Miller Horger. So, even though the community was "Beans," its post office had a different name for a while.

Changes to the Post Office

Later on, in 1925, the Post Office Department decided to make a change. They set up a brand new post office for "Bean's Place." This was done to avoid confusion. There were other towns nearby called Borger and Spurger, and the name "Horger" sounded too similar. The original Horger post office didn't close right away, but it finally did in 1929.

Life in Beans Over Time

Population and Maps

For many years, the community of Beans was quite small. It had a population of about 25 people all the way through 1944. If you looked at highway maps from the 1980s, you would still see this area marked as "Beans Community."

Roads and Access

From 1970 to 1979, Beans had a special road that helped people get there. It was a "spur route" of Texas Recreational Road 255. A spur route is like a short branch off a main road, making it easier to reach specific places.
