Beatrice of Savoy (born 1250, died 1292) was an important lady from the House of Savoy. She was the daughter of Amadeus IV, who was the Count of Savoy, and his second wife, Cecile of Baux. After her second marriage, she became known as the Lady of Villena.
Her Family and Early Life
Beatrice had a full brother named Boniface. She also had two sisters, Eleanor and Constance. From her father's first marriage, she had two older half-sisters. One of them was also named Beatrice.
When her father passed away in 1253, Beatrice received some money as part of her inheritance. Later, her brother Boniface, who was a count, died when he was only ten years old. Their uncle, Peter II, became the new Count of Savoy.
After Peter's death, Beatrice had to give up her claim to the region of Savoy. Her mother agreed to this decision. This allowed another uncle, Philip I, to become the Count. In a document from 1268, Beatrice was called "Contesson." This was probably to tell her apart from her older half-sister who had the same name.
Marriages and Her Son
Beatrice was first engaged to James. He was the second son of James I of Aragon. However, their engagement was called off in 1266. Ten years later, James became the King of Majorca.
Beatrice then married Peter of Chalon in 1268. He was the Lord of Châtelbelin. Peter gave some property to Beatrice in 1269. They were married for about six years, but they did not have any children. Peter passed away during this time.
In 1275, Beatrice married for a second time to Manuel of Castile. This was also a second marriage for Manuel. His first wife, Constance, had passed away. Manuel and Constance had two children together.
Beatrice and Manuel had one son named Juan Manuel. He was born in Escalona in 1282. Manuel died a year after their son was born. Because Manuel's other son had died young, Juan Manuel became the next Lord of Villena.
Beatrice took care of her son until she passed away nine years later. After her death, Juan Manuel was cared for by his uncle, Sancho IV of Castile.
