Early Life and Music Studies
Beatriz Ferreyra was born in Cordoba, Argentina. She started her musical journey by studying piano with Celia Bronstein in Buenos Aires. Later, she moved to Paris to continue her music education with the famous teacher Nadia Boulanger. She also learned from other important musicians like Earle Brown and György Ligeti in Germany.
Working with GRM
In 1963, Beatriz Ferreyra joined a special research group called the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM). This group was part of the French broadcasting company, ORTF, and was led by Pierre Schaeffer.
While working there, she helped with important research about sound. She also taught at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, sharing her knowledge with new students.
Music for Films
In 1973, Beatriz Ferreyra was asked to create music for a film called Homo Sapiens. The film was made by Fiorella Mariani. Beatriz created an hour-long piece of electronic music for the film. She also performed, edited, and mixed all the sounds herself.
Her music was very important for the film. It helped connect different scenes where people were doing various activities. Her sounds brought a sense of flow to the film's story.
Working with Others
Beatriz Ferreyra has worked with many other artists and institutions. In 1970, she collaborated with Bernard Baschet and his unique sound sculptures called Structures Sonores. She also spent time at Dartmouth College in 1976 and 1998, focusing on electronic music.
In 2015, she went on tour and released an album called Nahash with Christine Groult. This music was specially requested in 2011. For her live performances, Beatriz used four old-fashioned tape recorders. She also used special equipment she designed herself to change the speed of the tapes.
