Beatties Bluff is a ghost town in Madison County, Mississippi, United States. A ghost town is a place where almost everyone has left. Beatties Bluff was once an important settlement on the Big Black River. This river formed the northern border of Madison County. The town slowly disappeared after it was no longer the main government center for the county. Today, nothing of the old town remains. However, a new water treatment plant was built near the old site in 2001. This plant helps support a large Nissan factory in a nearby town.

The Story of Beatties Bluff

How the Town Started

Beatties Bluff began in the early 1800s. It was a small outpost along the Natchez Trace, an old travel route. When Yazoo County was created in 1823, Beatties Bluff was chosen as its first county seat. A county seat is the main town where the county government offices are located. This meant the courthouse and other important buildings were there.

Losing Its Importance

However, Beatties Bluff did not stay a county seat for long. In 1829, Yazoo County moved its county seat to Benton.

Then, in 1828, Madison County was formed. It also picked Beatties Bluff as its first county seat. This was good news for the town for a short time. Boats could travel up the Big Black River right to Beatties Bluff. The town had a post office, a courthouse, and other buildings made from logs.

But just like before, Beatties Bluff lost its status. Madison County soon moved its county seat to Livingston.

Why Beatties Bluff Disappeared

When Beatties Bluff lost its county seat status for the second time, many businesses and people moved away. They went to the new county seats where the government was located. Without its important role, Beatties Bluff slowly faded away. It became a true ghost town, with nothing left behind.

Beatties Bluff Today

In 2000, the Nissan Motor Company started building a large car factory in Canton. This town is close to where Beatties Bluff used to be. To support the new factory, a big wastewater treatment plant was built in 2001. This plant is located just west of the old Beatties Bluff site. It can clean a huge amount of water every day.
