Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Becila was a church leader from Galicia who lived in the late 500s. He was a bishop in the city of Lugo, and he followed a Christian belief called Arianism.

Biography

In the year 585, a powerful king named Leovigild conquered the Suebi kingdom. King Leovigild was a Visigoth ruler, and he made Arianism the official religion in his kingdom.

Because of this, the Catholic bishop of Lugo, named Nitigius, was sent away. Becila was then chosen to become the new bishop in his place. At the same time, the diocese of Lugo lost its important status. It became a smaller part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Braga.

Later, in 589, a new king named Reccared took over. King Reccared decided that Catholicism would be the only official religion for the entire Visigothic kingdom. He also brought back the Catholic bishops who had been sent away by King Leovigild.

Becila was one of the bishops who attended an important meeting called the Third Council of Toledo. At this council, he gave up Arianism and became a Catholic. It is thought that after he converted, he might have wanted to lead the diocese of Lugo again, especially after the older Bishop Nitigius passed away. However, there is no clear proof that this actually happened.
