Beckley Bog is a special type of wetland located near Norfolk in Litchfield County, Connecticut. It's known as a "sphagnum-heath-black spruce bog." This means it's a very wet area filled with a spongy moss called sphagnum, small shrubby plants (heaths), and black spruce trees. It's the most southern bog of its kind in all of New England!

What is a Bog?
A bog is a unique kind of wetland that gets most of its water from rain, not from rivers or groundwater. This makes the water very acidic and low in nutrients. Because of these conditions, bogs are home to special plants and animals that can survive where others can't.
The Deep Peat of Beckley Bog
One amazing thing about Beckley Bog is how deep its "peat moss" is. Peat is made from dead plant material, mostly sphagnum moss, that builds up over thousands of years because it doesn't fully decay in the bog's acidic, oxygen-poor water. At Beckley Bog, this peat is over 51 feet deep! This deep layer of peat holds a lot of history about past climates and plant life.
Why Beckley Bog is Special
Beckley Bog is important for several reasons. It's a rare habitat, especially being so far south in New England. It provides a home for plants and animals that need these specific bog conditions to thrive.
A National Natural Landmark
Because of its unique features and importance, Beckley Bog was named a National Natural Landmark in May 1977. This means it's recognized by the United States government as an outstanding example of a natural area. It's like a special badge of honor for nature!
Protecting the Bog
Beckley Bog was purchased in 1957 by two groups: The Nature Conservancy and the Conservation and Research Foundation. The Nature Conservancy is a large environmental organization that works to protect important natural lands and waters. This purchase was actually the very first time The Nature Conservancy bought land in Connecticut! Today, Beckley Bog is part of a larger group of protected areas called the Northwest Highlands preserves, ensuring it stays safe for future generations.
