Discovering Beirne's Past: A Look at Its History

Beirne was first settled in 1880. A man named James Lewis Beirne from Grafton, Illinois bought a large piece of land here. He purchased about 800 acres (3.2 km²) to start the community.

Within a year, the area began to grow. There was a lumber mill and a store. A train station, called a railroad depot, was also built. This helped people and goods move in and out of Beirne.

By 1890, the community was sometimes called Beirne Station. This name showed its connection to the railroad. In 1897, Beirne had at least two sawmills. These mills cut wood to make furniture and other items.

Today, lumber is still very important to Beirne. A company called Anthony Timberlands has a large hardwood lumber operation there.
