Belgae facts for kids
The Belgae were ancient tribes who lived in a part of Europe called Gaul (which is mostly modern-day France). They lived on the west side of the Rhine River around 300 BC. Over time, some Belgae also moved to Britain and possibly even Ireland. The Roman province of Gallia Belgica was named after them. Much later, the modern country of Belgium also got its name from these tribes.
Who Were the Belgae?
The Belgae were a group of tribes. They lived in northern Gaul, which is now mostly France, Belgium, and parts of Germany. They were known for being brave warriors. The famous Roman general Julius Caesar wrote about them in his books.
Where Did They Live?
The main home of the Belgae was in northern Gaul. This area was west of the Rhine River. They lived there starting around 300 BC. Their lands stretched across what is now Belgium, parts of France, and some areas of Germany.
Belgae in Britain
Some Belgae tribes also traveled to Britain. They arrived as raiders, meaning they would attack and take things. Later, they settled down in southern Britain. This happened shortly before the Romans came to Britain. They made their homes in an area that is now called Hampshire in England.
