About Bella Vista's Location
Bella Vista is a census-designated place (CDP). This means it is a place identified by the United States Census Bureau for statistics. The area covers about 22.3 square miles (57.9 km2). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
Bella Vista's Past: A Lumber Town
Bella Vista was once a very active lumber town. Lumber is wood that has been cut and prepared for use. A special structure called a lumber flume brought wood to a mill in Bella Vista. This flume was finished in August 1888.
What was a Lumber Flume?
A lumber flume was a V-shaped channel. It was built high up, sometimes 90 feet (27 meters) tall. It was supported by tall scaffolds. Lumber from a place called Round Mountain would float down this flume. It traveled to the mill in Bella Vista. At the mill, the wood was treated and then sent south.
The "Dump" and Early Town Life
The place where the lumber flume ended was called "the dump." This is because the lumber was "dumped" there. The first town area had a general store, company offices, and other buildings. Bella Vista grew into a busy community. At its busiest, about 2,000 people lived there. The town had shops, places to relax, and even gas stations.
The Anderson and Bella Vista Railway
Bella Vista also had its own train line. It was called the Anderson and Bella Vista Railway. This railway was about 15 miles (24 km) long. It carried lumber and other goods. The train took these items to a larger railway connection in Anderson, California.
Work on this railway started around 1891. It helped move the lumber from Bella Vista to Anderson. The railway was no longer used in the 1930s and was taken apart.
Why the Flume Stopped Short
The lumber flume started at Hatchet Mountain and was 32 miles (51 km) long. It ended at "the dump" in Bella Vista. The lumber company wanted to extend the flume all the way to Anderson. However, the land in the valley was too flat. A flume needs a slope to work properly. So, they had to find other ways, like the railway, to move the lumber.
