Belle Isle is a city located in Orange County, Florida, in the United States. It's part of the larger Orlando area. In 2020, about 7,032 people lived there. Belle Isle is known for its beautiful lakes, especially Lake Conway.
History of Belle Isle
The area where Belle Isle is located was first home to the Timucua people around the 800s.
The first official government for Belle Isle was set up in 1924. C. H. Hoffner was the community's first mayor. This early government lasted until 1928, when it stopped operating. Belle Isle was then re-established as a city in 1954, and it has been running continuously ever since.
Since 2003, Belle Isle has used a council-manager government. This means that the mayor's job is mostly ceremonial, like a leader who represents the city but doesn't make all the daily decisions. Instead, a city manager handles the day-to-day operations. Seven commissioners are chosen by voters to represent different areas of the city on the city council. All these elected officials serve for three years and do not get paid for their work.
In 2009, the City of Belle Isle started its own police department. Before this, the Orange County Sheriff was in charge of policing the area. Creating its own police department almost doubled the number of city employees, growing from 11 to 20 people.

Belle Isle is also home to Lake Conway, which is one of the largest lakes in the greater Orlando area. A part of Little Lake Conway, another significant lake, is also within Belle Isle.
