Belmont North is a suburb in Greater Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. It's part of the City of Lake Macquarie and is located about 18 kilometers (11 miles) southwest of Newcastle's main city area. You can find it on the eastern side of the big Lake Macquarie.

Belmont North's Past

Early Days and Names

Belmont North's land was divided up in the 1920s. This happened at the same time as nearby areas like Floraville and Jewells. The area was first officially named Wommara Estate. This name came from an Awabakal word. The Awabakal people are the traditional owners of this land. A "wommara" is a special tool used for throwing spears. Later, the name "Wommara" was given to a main road in the suburb.

Mining and Homes

In the 1900s, a large coal mine called the John Darling Colliery was very important to Belmont North. It was named after a past leader of a big company called BHP. In the 1940s, 50 special round buildings called Nissen huts were built here. These huts were homes for coal miners who came from Britain. Today, 23 of these unique huts are still standing.

Local School

Belmont North Primary School opened its doors in 1953. This school helps educate around 250 students from the area.
