The Story of Jewells

How Jewells Got Its Name

The suburb of Jewells was named after a person called John Jewell. He was known for leading hunting trips in an area called Jewells Swamp. This swamp was a lively place, full of different animals. You could find waterfowl, kangaroos, and emus living there.

Jewells During World War II

During World War II, Jewells Swamp and Jewells Beach played a special role. They were used as a training ground for soldiers. These soldiers were called commandos, and they practiced their skills in this area.

Growing Up: From Land to Suburb

The land that is now Jewells was first divided into smaller pieces in the 1920s. This happened at the same time as nearby areas like Belmont North and Floraville. However, the area didn't really start to develop until the 1970s. A public school for children opened in Jewells in 1977. A few years later, in 1982, a local shopping center was built, making it easier for people to buy things close to home.
