Tingira Heights is a cool suburb located in the City of Lake Macquarie area of New South Wales, Australia. It's about 16 kilometers (10 miles) southwest of Newcastle city center. You can find it on the eastern side of the beautiful Lake Macquarie. This area started to be built up in the 1960s.
History of Tingira Heights
The Awabakal people are the original traditional owners of the land where Tingira Heights is now. They have lived here for a very long time.
Before 1965, this suburb had a different name: Violet Town. But how did it get its current name? It's named after a special ship!
The Ship Tingira
There was a ship called Tingira. This name came from an Indigenous tribe living near the border of New South Wales and Queensland. The ship Tingira was Australia's very first naval training vessel. It helped train sailors for the navy starting in 1912. The ship was taken out of service in 1941.
How the Name Changed
In 1965, a group called the H.M.A.S Tingira Old Boys Association wanted to honor the ship. They asked if a town could be named after it. The local group, the Violet Town Progress Association, agreed to the idea. So, the name was changed from Violet Town to Tingira Heights. Sometimes, you might see the name spelled as "Tingara" too, but "Tingira" is the main one.
