Belén River
Country Panama

The Belén River is an important river located in the country of Panama. It flows through a region known for its natural beauty and history.

Discovery of the Belén River

The Belén River was first seen by Europeans during the explorer Christopher Columbus's fourth and final trip to the Americas. This journey took place between 1502 and 1504. Columbus was searching for a passage to the Pacific Ocean and the Far East. He hoped to find a new trade route.

In January 1503, Columbus and his crew arrived at the river. They were told there were gold mines further upriver in the jungle. Because of this, Columbus decided to build a small fort, called a garrison, near the river.

The local people, the Guaymí people, were led by Chief Quibian. They soon realized that the Europeans planned to stay. On April 6, 1503, the Guaymí people attacked the Spanish garrison. Columbus and his men quickly left the fort. Ten days later, Columbus sailed back to Spain. He never returned to the Americas after this voyage.
