Ben Lomond is a small, quiet community in West Virginia, United States. It's not a city or a town with its own government. Instead, it's an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and businesses that are part of a larger county, Mason County. Ben Lomond is located right next to the Ohio River. It sits where two roads meet: West Virginia Route 2 and County Route 56 (Mud Run Road). This spot is about 9.7 kilometers (6 miles) south of Point Pleasant.
The community is in the area where water flows into Mud Run. Mud Run is a small stream that eventually flows into Crab Creek. A train line, now run by CSX Transportation, also goes through Ben Lomond. This line used to be part of the old Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. Ben Lomond once had its own post office, but it is now closed. The community was named after Ben Lomond, a famous mountain in Scotland.
History
The area around Ben Lomond, including nearby settlements, was known as Mercer's Bottom since the 1790s. This name was used for the land on the east bank of the Ohio River. About a mile south of Ben Lomond is another community called Hogsett. Hogsett is located near the mouth of Flatfoot Creek.
Both Ben Lomond and Hogsett once had their own post offices. Hogsett got its post office in 1885, and Ben Lomond got its in 1886. For a while, the U.S. Post Office Department wasn't sure which village should keep its post office. In the end, Ben Lomond's post office closed permanently in 1919. Hogsett's post office stayed open much longer, until 1967.
