A Look at Bendern's History
Early Times and Conflicts
Bendern has a long and interesting past. During a conflict called the Swabian War, Swiss forces unfortunately burned down the village. This was a difficult time for the people living there.
For nearly 100 years, from 1538 to 1636, a group of monks called Premonstratensians lived in Bendern. They came from St. Luzi Abbey in Chur because they were escaping a big religious change called the Reformation.
The Church Hill's Importance
The church hill in Bendern is a very special place for Liechtenstein's history. On March 16, 1699, something important happened here. The men from Liechtenstein's lowlands gathered on the church hill. They promised their loyalty to the Prince of Liechtenstein. This happened after the Prince bought the land known as the Lordship of Schellenberg. The Bendern fountain was later built to remember this important event.
Over the years, archaeologists have found many old things in Bendern. They have learned that the church's history goes back to Roman times and even earlier. They also found pottery that shows people lived here in prehistoric times.
The Benderner Fastentuch
The local church, Mariä Himmelfahrt, used to have a special cloth called the velum quadragesimale. It's known in German as the Benderner Fastentuch. This beautiful baroque cloth is now a valuable treasure at the Liechtenstein National Museum in Vaduz. The church in Bendern now has a copy of it.
Where is Bendern Located?
Bendern is located right by the Rhine river. It's also near the Eschnerberg mountain. The village is very close to Gamprin and the border with Switzerland. There's a road bridge that connects Bendern with the Swiss village of Haag, which is part of Sennwald.
What Happens in Bendern's Economy?
Bendern is a busy place! There are about 100 businesses in the municipality. These businesses provide around 2,500 jobs for people.
The village is also home to the Liechtenstein-Institut (LI). This institute focuses on research about Liechtenstein. Until 2017, Bendern was also where the International Academy for Philosophy (IAP) was located.
