Who Was Benedetto of Savoy?
Benedetto was born at the Palace of Venaria in Italy. He was the youngest child of Charles Emmanuel III of Sardinia and Elisabeth Therese of Lorraine. Sadly, his mother passed away while giving birth to him. He was named after Pope Benedict XIV, who became pope the year before Benedetto was born. Some of his famous cousins included the future Queen of Naples and Marie Antoinette. His father loved him very much and considered him his favorite child.
His Early Life and Home
Benedetto's uncle, Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor, hoped he would marry his daughter, Maria Christina of Austria. However, this marriage never happened. In 1753, Benedetto's father gave him the Palazzo Chiablese as his home. Benedetto later made the palace even bigger. In 1763, his father gave him the special title of Duke of Chablais. As the son of a king, he was known as Royal Highness.
Marriage and Military Role
On March 19, 1775, Benedetto married his niece, Princess Maria Anna of Savoy. They did not have any children together. Princess Maria Anna passed away many years later, in 1824.
Benedetto was a skilled soldier. He was put in charge of the Army of Italy. This army included French troops and aimed to bring back the monarchy in France. This was after the French king, Louis XVI, was executed in 1793.
His Final Years
Benedetto died in Rome when he was 66 years old. He was first buried at the church of San Nicolo dei Cesarini. Later, his remains were moved to the Royal Basilica of Superga in Turin.
What Were His Titles?
Benedetto had different titles throughout his life:
- June 21, 1741 - June 19, 1796: His Royal Highness Prince Benedetto of Savoy.
- June 19, 1796 – January 4, 1808: His Royal Highness The Duke of Chablais (Duca del Chiablese).
