Benedetto Aloisi Masella was born in a town called Pontecorvo, Italy. He went to school to become a priest, first in Ferentino, then in Rome. He studied at important universities there. He became a priest on June 1, 1902. After that, he worked as a private secretary for his uncle, Cardinal Gaetano Aloisi Masella.

Early Career and Diplomatic Work

In 1906, Aloisi Masella started working for the Roman Curia, which is like the central government of the Catholic Church. He worked in the Vatican's main office for foreign affairs. He then became a diplomat, working for the Vatican in Portugal from 1908 to 1919. He was first a secretary and then took charge of the office.

He was given special titles like privy chamberlain and domestic prelate by the Pope. These titles showed his growing importance. On November 20, 1919, he was appointed as the Pope's representative, called a nuncio, to Chile.

Becoming an Archbishop and Nuncio

On December 15, 1919, Pope Benedict XV named him a Titular Archbishop. This meant he had the rank of an archbishop, but for a historical diocese that no longer exists. He officially became a bishop on December 21, 1919. Later, on April 26, 1927, he was named the Pope's representative to Brazil.

Becoming a Cardinal

Aloisi Masella became a Cardinal-Priest on February 18, 1946. This was decided by Pope Pius XII. On June 21, 1948, he was promoted to a higher rank, becoming a Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina.

On October 27, 1954, Pope Pius XII gave him two more important jobs. He became the archpriest of the Basilica of St. John Lateran, which is a very important church in Rome. He also became the prefect of a special department that deals with church ceremonies and rules.

Chamberlain and Vatican Council

On October 9, 1958, he was chosen as the chamberlain of the Roman Church. This is a very important role, especially when a Pope has died and a new one needs to be elected. He helped manage things during the time between popes.

From 1962 to 1965, Cardinal Aloisi Masella took part in the Second Vatican Council. This was a very important meeting of Catholic leaders from all over the world. They discussed how the Church could better serve people in modern times.

He also voted in the election for a new Pope in 1963, which chose Pope Paul VI. Cardinal Aloisi Masella retired from his role as prefect of the Discipline of the Sacraments on January 11, 1968.

He passed away in Rome on September 30, 1970, at the age of 91. He was the oldest cardinal at that time. He was buried in the cathedral in his hometown of Pontecorvo.
