Bergschenhoek is a town in the Netherlands. It is located in the province of South Holland. This town is part of a larger area called Lansingerland. It's about 10 kilometers north of the big city of Rotterdam.
About Bergschenhoek
Bergschenhoek used to be its own town with its own local government. But on January 1, 2007, it joined with two nearby towns. These towns are Berkel en Rodenrijs and Bleiswijk. Together, they formed a new larger municipality called Lansingerland. People in the area often call these three towns the "3B Hoek."
A Growing Town
Bergschenhoek is a town that is always growing. Many new people are moving there. Because of this, it is often expanding with new homes. Most people who live in Bergschenhoek work in bigger cities nearby. These cities include The Hague and Rotterdam. This makes Bergschenhoek a "commuter town."
The town's population has grown a lot since 1990. Back then, about 7,600 people lived there. By 2019, the population was nearly 18,500. This growth happened because of special plans to build more homes. These plans are known as "Vinex-plans."
What's in the Name?
The name Bergschenhoek comes from a part of the city of Rotterdam. This part is called Hillegersberg. There was an old road that led to Hillegersberg. A small settlement started to grow on a corner of this road. In Dutch, "hoek" means "corner." So, the village was named after Hillegersberg and the corner where it grew. That's how it got the name (Hillegers)Bergschenhoek.
