Berlin Township is a special kind of local government area called a civil township. It's located in St. Clair County, which is in the state of Michigan. Exploring Berlin Township's Communities

Berlin Township is home to several smaller communities, each with its own interesting history. These places often started as small settlements and grew over time.

Allenton: A Historic Hub

Allenton is an unincorporated community within Berlin Township. This means it's a recognized place, but it doesn't have its own separate city government. It's located about 5 kilometers south of Interstate 69. The ZIP code for Allenton, 48002, covers all of Berlin Township.

This community began around 1844. A man named Kerkimer Smith, who ran an inn, started a stagecoach line that went all the way to Detroit. At first, the area was known as "Smith's Corners." It even had a train station called "Smith" on the Pere Marquette Railway. In 1883, a post office opened with the same name. Later, in 1910, it was renamed Allenton to honor Darius and Jesse Allen, who were important leaders in the community.

Berville: Named for the Township

Berville is another community in Berlin Township. You can find it about 4.5 miles north of Armada. The name "Berville" was chosen because it includes the first part of "Berlin," the township's name.

People started buying land here in 1835, and the first settlers arrived around 1840. A post office served Berville from 1862 until 1962. Locals also sometimes called this area "Baker's Corners."

East Berlin: A Former Post Office

East Berlin was once the name of a post office located in this township. It operated for a short time, from 1851 to 1856.

Lesterville: A Mill Town's Past

Lesterville was a historic spot in the township. It was located where Belle River/Beardsley Road and Sperry Road meet. This community started around 1866 as a mill settlement and was first known as "Lester's Mills." Because it was on the Belle River, it was also called "Belle River." A post office with that name opened in 1867. The spelling changed to "Belleriver" in 1895, but the post office closed in 1904.

Berlin Township's Size and Land

According to the United States Census Bureau, Berlin Township covers a total area of about 37.1 square miles (or 96.2 square kilometers). All of this area is land, meaning there are no large lakes or rivers within its boundaries.
