Bernabé Martí (born Bernabé Martínez Remacha JR, 14 November 1928 – 18 March 2022) was a famous Spanish opera singer. He was known for his powerful tenor voice. A tenor is a type of male singing voice, usually the highest male voice in opera.

A Young Musician's Journey
Bernabé Martí was born in a small town called Villarroya de la Sierra in Aragon, Spain. He was the youngest of six children. His first musical training was playing the saxophone in his town's band.
Later, he decided to study singing. He went to music schools in different cities. He studied in Zaragoza, then at the Madrid Royal Conservatory in Spain. He also traveled to Italy to study at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena. He even took special lessons with a famous singer named Mercedes Llopart in Milan.
Becoming an Opera Star
Martí's first big success in opera came in 1958. He performed in an opera called La vida breve in Granada, Spain. After that, he sang in Salome in Germany. For the next two years, he traveled around Europe, singing in many different cities.
In 1960, he performed at the famous Liceu opera house in Barcelona. It was for a new opera called El cap de drac. Around this time, he started using his professional name, Bernabé Martí.
He then began performing all over the world. He sang in France, Germany, and many cities in South America. These included Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Lima, Caracas, and Santiago de Chile. He performed in popular operas like Carmen, Werther, and Manon Lescaut.
Singing in America
Bernabé Martí also became very popular in the United States. His first performance in New York City was at Carnegie Hall. He sang in an opera called Il pirata.
After that, he performed in many other famous operas. These included Il trovatore, Rigoletto, Tosca, Werther, Turandot, Pagliacci, Carmen, and Norma. He sang in cities like San Antonio, Washington D.C., Dallas, Houston, and Baltimore. From 1967 to 1971, he was a regular singer with the New York City Opera.
Family Life
On 14 August 1964, Bernabé Martí married another very famous opera singer, the soprano Montserrat Caballé. They met earlier that year when Bernabé had to step in to sing in an opera called Madama Butterfly. The original singer was sick, and Bernabé took his place.
Bernabé Martí and Montserrat Caballé often sang together on stage. They had two children: a son named Bernabé Jr. and a daughter named Montserrat Martí. Their daughter Montserrat also became a singer, just like her parents!
Later Years
In 1972, Bernabé Martí had to stop a performance in Paris because of voice problems. Doctors found that he had a lung condition. He received treatment and got better. However, his singing career ended in 1985. This was after he was diagnosed with a heart condition.
Bernabé Martí passed away on 18 March 2022, at the age of 93. He died at his home in Barcelona, Spain.
