Bernard James's Early Life
Bernard James had an interesting path before becoming a basketball star. He left high school early but still loved to read and learn. He would often go to bookstores to read on his own.
Joining the Air Force
When he was 17, Bernard joined the United States Air Force. He served for six years as a security forces specialist. He reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. During his time in the Air Force, he was sent to places like Iraq, Qatar, and Afghanistan.
From Military to Basketball
Bernard first planned to stay in the military for his career. But then, he joined an informal basketball team on his base. Around this time, he had a big growth spurt, growing 5 inches (13 cm) taller!
He quickly became a top player in military basketball. He even made it onto the Air Force's all-star team. This made him think about basketball as a possible career. After his time in the Air Force ended, he left to go to Tallahassee Community College. This helped him get ready to play for a major college team in NCAA Division I.
Professional Basketball Career
Bernard James was picked as the 33rd player overall in the 2012 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. On the same night, he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. This trade also involved other players like Jared Cunningham and Jae Crowder.
Playing for the Dallas Mavericks
Bernard signed with the Dallas Mavericks on July 25, 2012. He played for them for a while. In 2014, he was also assigned to the Texas Legends, which is a team in the NBA's minor league, the NBA D-League.
He later signed with the Shanghai Sharks in China for the 2014–15 season. But he returned to the Dallas Mavericks in February 2015, signing a few short contracts to finish the season with them.
