Bernard Montgomery Muir, born on July 22, 1968, is a key leader in college sports. He is currently the athletic director at Stanford University. Before working at Stanford, he was also the athletic director at the University of Delaware and Georgetown University.
Early Life and Education
Bernard Muir was born in Gainesville, Florida. He went to Brown University and studied organizational behavior and management. While there, he also played basketball. In his final year, he was the co-captain of the team. After Brown, he earned a master's degree in sports administration from Ohio University.
Career in Sports Leadership
Muir started his career helping with the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. Later, he joined the staff of Notre Dame's athletic director, Kevin White.
In 2005, Muir became the athletic director at Georgetown University. Then, in 2009, he took the same job at the University of Delaware.
In 2012, Bob Bowlsby left Stanford to lead the Big 12 Conference. Stanford then chose Bernard Muir to be its seventh athletic director.
Muir is also part of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee. This committee helps choose the teams for the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament.
On February 24, 2025, Muir announced he would step down from his role. He will leave his position as Stanford Cardinal athletic director at the end of the 2024–25 school year.
Personal Life and Awards
Bernard Muir is married to Liz, and they have two daughters.
In December 2014, Muir was honored with a special award. He was one of six people to receive the 2015 Silver Anniversary Awards. The NCAA gives these awards each year. They celebrate former college athletes 25 years after their sports careers ended. The award recognizes both their success in sports and their achievements in their professional lives.
