Bernard of Wąbrzeźno (born Błażej Pęcharek) was a Roman Catholic priest and a Benedictine monk. He lived in the Benedictine Abbey in Lubiń, Poland, from 1575 to 1603. A Benedictine monk is a member of a religious community that follows the rules of Saint Benedict.

Bernard is known for a special legend. People say he performed a miracle to bring water back to a well in Grodzisk Wielkopolski, Poland. This well was very important because it supplied water for the town's brewery. The brewery was the main way the town earned money. The new water was said to make people healthy and produce much better beer. This led to many years of success for the town. Because of his good deeds, Bernard has been considered for beatification several times. Beatification is a step in the Catholic Church towards becoming a saint.

Who Was Bernard of Wąbrzeźno?

Bernard was one of eight children. His father, Paweł Pęcharek, was the mayor of Wąbrzeźno. Bernard was born in early 1575 in Wąbrzeźno, which was part of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth at the time. We don't know his exact birth date because a fire destroyed the town's church records. However, his older sister Elizabeth said under oath in 1645 that he was born around February 3.

After finishing parish school at age 12, Bernard went to the Jesuit College in Poznań. There, he was known for being kind and caring towards others. He showed great compassion for the sick and the poor.

Bernard's Life as a Monk

At 24, Bernard joined the Benedictine abbey in Lubiń. He became a novice, which is someone training to be a monk. He quickly became the master of novices, guiding younger monks. This was unusual because he was so young. He was good at connecting with young people.

Bernard wanted to teach in a Catholic school. This was a challenging time for the church. Many parishes were leaving the Catholic Church and becoming Protestant during the Reformation.

Bernard lived at the abbey for four years. He became a priest in 1602. Sadly, he died on June 2, 1603, likely from tuberculosis. People remembered him for his deep spiritual life. He often spent many hours praying and was always eager to work hard.

What is the Beatification Process?

After Bernard's death, many people shared stories of miracles he had performed. They also said miracles happened at his grave. In the 1730s, the Archbishop of Poznań started collecting information about Bernard's life and miracles. This was to begin the process of beatification.

The documents needed for beatification were sent to Rome. However, many of these important papers were lost. This happened when Napoleon's army occupied Rome in the late 1700s. Later attempts to restart the process were also stopped by wars and occupations in Poland.

In 1968, the Archbishop of Poznań formed a group to continue the process. But the work slowed down again due to members passing away. Finally, in 2009, new efforts began. The beatification process for Bernard officially restarted on March 18, 2009, in Poznań.

Bernard's Legacy and the Grodziskie Beer Legend

One of the most famous stories about Father Bernard is linked to the town of Grodzisk Wielkopolski. Around 1603, he arrived there from the Benedictine monastery in Lubiń. The town's wells were dry, and people were struggling. The brewery, which depended on the well water, was the main source of income for the town and its hospital.

Bernard prayed for the wells. Suddenly, a new source of water filled the Old Market Well. Legends say this new water made anyone who drank it healthy again. Also, the beer made from this water was much better than before. The well became a special treasure for the town. It was credited with the success of Grodzisk's breweries for centuries.

Between 1620 and 1815, the people of Grodzisk made an annual trip to Bernard's tomb. They brought a large barrel of their special beer as a thank you. This tradition was brought back in 2003 by Henryk Szymański, the mayor of Grodzisk Wielkopolski. On September 5, 2009, the city unveiled a 2-meter (6.6 ft) tall statue of Father Bernard. It stands next to the Old Market Well, honoring his memory and the legend.
