Bernardo Ferrándiz Bádenes (born July 21, 1835 – died May 2, 1885) was a talented Spanish painter. He was known for his "costumbrista" art. This means he painted scenes from everyday life and local traditions. Many people consider him one of the founders of the "Málaga School of Painting."

Life of Bernardo Ferrándiz
Bernardo Ferrándiz was born in Valencia, Spain. His father was a fisherman. Bernardo started his art education at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos de Valencia. He later studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. From early on, he loved painting scenes from daily life.
Art Studies and Travels
His painting called "The Viaticum" showed a dying beggar. This painting helped him win a special scholarship from the Valencia government. The scholarship allowed him to continue his art studies abroad. In 1859, he moved to Paris, France. There, he took classes at the École des Beaux-Arts and showed his art at the famous Salon exhibition. Paris became his main home until 1868.
Bernardo Ferrándiz traveled a lot during this time. He visited places in North Africa and Italy. He also took part in many art exhibitions. He received an honorable mention in 1860 at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He won second place in 1864 and a silver medal in 1866.
Teaching and Later Life
In 1868, Bernardo got married. He then moved to Málaga, Spain. He was offered a teaching position at the Escuela de Bella Artes de San Telmo . Ten years later, he became the director of this art school. Some of his famous students included José Moreno Carbonero, Enrique Simonet, and José Denis Belgrano.
Because of his political views, he had to leave Spain for a while. He lived in Rome, Italy, until 1876. His paintings are now found in many places across Western Europe. The Museo de Málaga in Spain has thirteen of his works.
One of his most famous paintings shows a meeting of the Water Tribunal of the plain of Valencia. This painting was bought by Napoleon III, a French emperor. Today, you can see it at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux in France. Besides his paintings, Bernardo Ferrándiz also decorated the ceiling of the Teatro Cervantes .
He passed away in Málaga when he was 59 years old. There is a monument dedicated to him in the Parque de Malaga . The sculptor Agapit Vallmitjana i Barbany designed it. The monument was officially opened in 1913.
