Bernedo's History
Early Mentions
The name Bernedo first appeared in old documents way back in the year 1025. This shows that the area has been settled for a very long time. During the Middle Ages, Bernedo was an important place. It was a fortified town with strong walls, a castle, and a tall tower to protect it.
Royal Charters
In 1182, a king named Sancho the Wise of Navarre gave Bernedo special rights. These rights, called charter rights, gave the town more freedom to govern itself. For about 300 years, Bernedo was part of the Kingdom of Navarre.
Joining Castile and Álava
Later, in 1476, Bernedo became part of the Crown of Castile. Then, in 1490, the Catholic Monarchs (King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella) made it part of the city of Vitoria. Bernedo was the last populated area to join the province of Álava.
Growing as a Municipality
Throughout more recent history, several smaller municipalities have joined with Bernedo. In 1965, the areas of San Román de Campezo and Quintana became part of Bernedo. Later, in 1976, the municipality also absorbed Arlucea-Marquínez. This area itself had been formed in 1963 by joining Arlucea and Marquínez. This process helped Bernedo grow into the municipality it is today.
