What's in a Name? The Meaning of Bernheze
The name "Bernheze" comes from an old farm called "Bernhese." This farm later became part of the Berne Abbey, which was a religious community. The abbey was first located in a village called Bern.
The name "Bernhese" has two parts:
- Bern means "water" or "well" in old Dutch.
- Hese means "bush" or "forest."
So, "Bernhese" likely meant something like "water in the forest" or "well in the bushes." In 1857, the Berne Abbey moved to Heeswijk, which is now part of Bernheze.
