The Bernina District was an administrative area in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. Think of a canton like a state or a large region. This district covered about 237 square kilometers (around 91 square miles). In 2015, about 4,619 people lived there.

On January 1, 2017, the Bernina District was changed. It became the Bernina Region as part of a big reorganization in the canton.

Where Was the Bernina District?

The Bernina District was in the very southeastern part of Switzerland. It was unique because it was surrounded by Italy on three sides! This made it a special place, very close to its Italian neighbors.

Languages Spoken in Bernina

The main language spoken in the Bernina District was Italian. Most people living there spoke Italian.

According to a census in 2000, about 91% of the people spoke Italian. The second most common language was German, spoken by about 7.2% of the population. A small number of people, around 0.5%, spoke Romansh.

How the District Was Organized

The Bernina District was divided into two smaller areas, called sub-districts. These were Brusio and Poschiavo. Each of these sub-districts had just one town or municipality with the same name.

  • The Brusio sub-district included the municipality of Brusio.
  • The Poschiavo sub-district included the municipality of Poschiavo.

These two towns were the main communities within the Bernina District.
