Bert Patenaude's Club Career
Bert Patenaude was born in Massachusetts in 1909. He started playing soccer in his hometown of Fall River, Massachusetts. In 1928, he signed his first professional contract. This was with the Philadelphia Field Club in the American Soccer League. He scored six goals in just eight games for Philadelphia.
After a short time with J&P Coats, he joined his hometown team, the Fall River Marksmen. Here, he became a strong scoring partner with another player, Billy Gonsalves. Together, they scored many goals. Bert scored 112 goals in 114 games for the Marksmen! He stayed with Fall River until 1930. During this time, his team won the 1930 National Challenge Cup. This is a big soccer tournament in the United States.
In 1930, Bert moved to the Newark Americans. He scored seven goals in five games there. But he soon returned to the Fall River Marksmen. In 1931, the Fall River team joined with the New York Soccer Club. They formed a new team called the New York Yankees. Even though the Yankees won the National Cup that year, the records show Fall River as the winner. In the cup final, Bert scored five goals in one game! The Yankees won 6–2 against Chicago's Bricklayers and Masons F.C.. Later that year, the Yankees team moved and became the New Bedford Whalers.
Around 1933, Bert joined the Philadelphia German-Americans. In 1934, he moved to the St. Louis Central Breweries team. This team was in the St. Louis Soccer League, which was the only professional league at the time. His team, full of future Hall of Fame players, won the league title. They also won the 1935 National Challenge Cup.
In 1935, the Central Breweries team changed its name to the St. Louis Shamrocks. Bert stayed with them. In 1936, the Shamrocks reached the National Cup final. However, they lost to the Philadelphia German-Americans.
Bert Patenaude returned to the East Coast in 1936. He played one season with Philadelphia Passon before he stopped playing professional soccer. Bert went back to Fall River. He worked as a painter and carpenter until he passed away in 1974.
Bert Patenaude's International Career
In 1930, Bert Patenaude was chosen to play for the U.S. national team. He joined them for the very first 1930 FIFA World Cup in Uruguay. In the first game against Belgium, he scored a goal. Then, in the next game against Paraguay, he scored a hat-trick! The U.S. won that game 3–0.
After the U.S. team was knocked out by Argentina in the semifinals, they went on a tour. They played a game against Brazil, which they lost 4–3. Bert scored his sixth and final goal for the U.S. national team in that game. He never played for the national team again after that.
Bert Patenaude's record of four goals in one World Cup is still the highest for an American player. His total goals for the U.S. in the World Cup was also a record for a long time. It was only broken by Landon Donovan in 2010.
The First World Cup Hat-Trick
Bert Patenaude made history on July 17, 1930. This was during the first-ever World Cup. The United States was playing against Paraguay. Bert scored the first goal of the game in the tenth minute.
There was some confusion about the second goal. Some thought it was an own goal by a Paraguay player. Others thought it was scored by a U.S. player named Tom Florie. But many believed it was Bert's second goal. Bert then scored a third goal in the fiftieth minute. This gave the U.S. a 3–0 win.
Because of the confusion over the second goal, people argued about who scored the first World Cup hat-trick. Another player, Guillermo Stábile from Argentina, scored a hat-trick just two days later. However, on November 10, 2006, FIFA officially announced that Bert Patenaude was the first person to score a hat-trick in World Cup history. They confirmed that he scored all three goals against Paraguay.
Bert Patenaude was recognized for his amazing career. He was inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in 1971. He passed away in Fall River on his sixty-fifth birthday.
