What Happens in the Book
This book covers the autumn term of Bert's 5th grade year. Bert is really worried about getting sick, especially before Christmas.
Friendship and School Life
Bert's friends, Lill-Erik and Åke, celebrate their birthdays. In December, Bert's class takes part in a Saint Lucy procession. This is a special Swedish tradition where children dress up and sing. The school also has an exciting floorball tournament.
Bert is still dating Nadja. But he sometimes feels like she cares more about her violin than about him!
New Teacher and Christmas Break
One day at school, Bert's teacher, Sonja Ek, has an accident. She needs to leave school for a while. Bert hopes for a cool new substitute teacher. Instead, a strict guy named Håkan Kelinus arrives. Bert and his friends jokingly call him "Adolf" or "Terrormannen" (which means "Terror man").
During the Christmas break, Åke travels to the warm Canary Islands. Bert manages to stay healthy for Christmas, which he was so worried about! His uncle Jan comes to visit from New York City. Bert even gets a train trip to visit his cousins in Bollnäs.
Bert's Famous Sayings
The book ends with Bert's funny diary entries. On December 27th, he closes with "Tack och hej – smörgåspastej." This means "Thanks and goodbye – sandwich spread." On December 31st, he changes it slightly to "Tack och hej – leverpastej," which means "Thanks and goodbye – liver pâté." These funny goodbyes became very famous. They are used in other Bert books like Berts första, vidare, and ytterligare betraktelser. They also appeared in the Bert TV series and are now a big part of the whole Bert world!
