Bertrand Blier (born March 14, 1939 – died January 20, 2025) was a famous French film director and writer. He was known for making movies that often had a unique and sometimes funny style. One of his most famous films, Get Out Your Handkerchiefs, won a very important award called the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1979. This award is given to the best non-English language movie each year.

Life and Early Years

Bertrand Blier was born in a town called Boulogne-Billancourt in France. His father was a well-known actor named Bernard Blier, and his mother was a pianist. Even though his parents were involved in the arts, Bertrand did not finish high school.

Bertrand Blier had three children. He had a daughter named Béatrice with his first wife, Françoise. He was married to Françoise for twenty years. Later, he had a son named Léonard with actress Anouk Grinberg. He also had another daughter named Leila with actress Farida Rahouadj, to whom he was married.

In 1996, his film Mon Homme was featured at the 46th Berlin International Film Festival. Later, in 2005, his movie How Much Do You Love Me? was shown at the 28th Moscow International Film Festival. At this festival, Blier won the Silver George award for Best Director, which is a big honor for a filmmaker.
